Eye strain is a common cause of headache. Keeping up to date with regular eye exams and eyeglass prescriptions is the best treatment. This problem commonly begins in school aged children but it can really happen to anyone, especially if they've never had an eye exam or are overdue. Typically, a headache from eye strain is noticed in the temples. Taking a break from the visual task at hand will usually bring short term relief.
On a more serious note, hypertension can cause a person to experience headaches. It is important to self-monitor your blood pressure, especially if there is a family history of hypertension or an existing diagnosis of the condition. This usually requires prescription medication and regular medical checkups. Keeping blood pressure in check will reduce headache frequency and reduce risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease.
Exposure to carbon monoxide can produce a number of symptoms, including headache. Fatalities have occurred due to carbon monoxide exposure. Yearly inspection the HVAC system in your home
will help reduce exposure risk. It is also important to ensure that the vents from the heating system to the outside remain unobstructed. It is not uncommon to hear of these vents freezing over during the cold months of winter. Making a point to check the vents regularly is a good preventive. Carbon monoxide detectors in the home are also beneficial.
