Ten Remedies for Restless Leg Syndrome Relief

Web MD has a great slide presentation about home remedies for Restless Leg Syndrome--they're all simple things most anyone can do to help manage this condition.





Here is a quick list of ten of the suggestions they present~~

  1. keep a regular bedtime--helps combat fatigue and keeps symptoms in check
  2. stretch before you sleep~leg stretches may help just before bed or following prolonged sitting
  3. eliminate caffeine~may worsen symptoms for some RLS sufferers
  4. warm bath before sleep~a classic way to wind down and relax before sleep
  5. exercise habit~one study found that exercise resulted in reduced leg movement/deeper sleep
  6. exercise your brain~crossword puzzles, knitting, etc. are good distraction techniques
  7. leg massage~calf massage can help one to fall asleep more quickly
  8. yoga~stretching, breathing and relaxation of can relieve mild RLS symptoms
  9. avoid alcohol and cigarettes~nicotine and alcohol can exaggerate RLS symptoms
  10. medication review~some cold and allergy medicines and antidepressants can worsen your symptoms. 
It's also interesting to note that maintaining healthy iron levels are important in managing RLS. If you have not had your blood levels checked and you have RLS, you might want to work with your physician to correct this type of problem.

Sciatica: A common pain in the butt!

Sciatica pain results from pressure or damage to the sciatic nerve.  This nerve originates in the spine and runs down through the buttocks and the back of the leg...so if you've ever literally had a pain in the butt, it is possible that sciatica is the problem.  The cause of the pressure can be from a number of sources...for instance,  compression in the spinal cord due to disc injury or a tumor. The sciatica pain sensation can vary widely..it can present as a numbness or tingling, dull ache, burning, and in severe cases the pain can make movement quite difficult. Over time, it is possible for sciatica to resolve on its own.  If it does not, it is important to seek medical help to determine the root cause of the pain. The usual first course of remedies for sciatica include ice application to the affected area for the first 48-72 hours, followed by heat.  Over the counter pain medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen are also appropriate.  ...
